about

recorded in an old shed 28th july 2018...

'Woodshedding' is a term used by jazz musicians to describe intensive practice on your own away from distractions, but sometimes these things need to be taken literally. Old sheds have nice acoustics and a sense of solitude that seems appropriate for a solo sax album.
The title of this album has a few different aspects.. about ten years ago one of my friends started to joke about the number of times a certain musician's name got mentioned in a music magazine, even in reviews of albums he'd not played on. We were laughing about this in the pub after a gig and the drummer turned round and said "who the fuck is XXXXX?" and for months after, 'Who the fuck is....?" became an in joke with us.
Students of rock'n'roll history will also be aware of that photo of Keith Richards standing next to Mick wearing a t shirt with the slogan 'Who The Fuck Is Mick Jagger'
So when it came time to do another solo sax album, the title was already waiting, given that my playing doesn't follow in the Parker lineage and there's definitely no circular breathing to bore you here. Sacrificing dynamics and articulation just so I can sustain a note for a long time isn't something I'm interested in - I've tried it and I can't find any musical application for such a technique. I want all the irregularity, uncertainty and imperfection that life has to offer to be reflected in my music. To paraphrase another Mr Parker - normal breathing will suffice..
